President’s Minute

It’s 2012 and we have a great year to look forward to. Our guest speakers will cover topics on everything from salt-water fishing to hex hatches and warm water fly fishing. Add to that some more trips this spring with the final club meeting before summer a picnic at one of our local lakes, and the rest of the 2011-2012 club year will be great. Once again, I want to express our thanks to Joe and Bonnie Sudomir for sponsoring the Holiday dinner. There was a good turnout, and as always, the food and conversations were great. Thanks so much to the two of you for your outstanding support of the club.

January Meeting

Our January meeting will be at Field High School at 6:45 PM. Charles will again lead us in tying a fly pattern. Mike Janosko talking about salt water fly fishing will follow the fly tying. It should be a great meeting. Don’t miss it!

January Guest Speaker

This month we are pleased to have Mike Janosko, an avid fly fisher to talk about saltwater fly fishing. Mike has been fly fishing since 1959 and as he puts it, he is just a guy that likes to catch whatever he can on a fly. He is not in the fishing or tackle business, just a dedicated fly fisher with a great deal of experience.

Mike got my first fly rod (a GBF Wright and McGill) in 1959 and used a level C line. He also started fly tying around the same time, fishing for bluegill and bass. In 1970 he caught his first trout on a fly in Hickory Creek around Tionesta. He has fished a great deal in the Ausable system, and then started saltwater fly fishing around 1992 in Key West. He has experienced the following places; Florida Keys for tarpon/ permit/ bonefish and shark, the Everglades for snook/ ladyfish/ baby tarpon/ speckled trout, Belize for bonefish, Montauk for false albacore/ blues, Boston Harbor for stripers, Roanoke River for spawning stripers, Cape Lookout for albies/ reds/ blues/ speckled and gray trout/ amberjack, and Charleston, SC for reds.

Still on his list are the sail and tuna. All of the saltwater trips have been out of a boat with a local guide.

WRFA Fly Rod Raffle

To help raise money for future speakers, the club has been able to purchase an Echo Ion 10ft 7wt fly rod to raffle. This rod was designed to generate high line speed while reducing fatigue. It’s great for casting large flies on windy days and works well when using continuous motion fly casting techniques.

This rod is regularly priced at $189.00 retail. Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00. The drawing will be held on Saturday, March 24 th at Gateway Exploration Center at Sippo Lake. Please contact Brett for packages of tickets that you can buy or sell.

North Coast Fly Tying Expo

The North Coast Fly Tying Expo will be held Saturday, January 14 th, 2012 at Lakeland Community College, Kirtland from 9:00am to 4:00pm. It is located off Route 306 just south of Interstate 90, east of Cleveland.  This is a wonderful way to break the monotony of winter, learn about tying a variety of flies and to learn about fly-fishing opportunities. Instructional seminars are offered and many fly fishing vendors have their equipment on sale. It is a great show and worth your effort to attend.
